CONFESSIONS OF OPPONENTS

All the Shias and Sunnis believe in Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)'s tradition,
"Whoever from my people (muslims) memorizes forty traditions re-quired in his daily life, Allah will raise him on the Day of Judgement as a learned, knowledgeable person." Keeping this tradition in mind, many authors both Shias and Sunnis have named their books 'Forty Traditions'.
As we all know, Imamate and mastership is an important fundamental in Islam because the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) has said, "The amount of arrangements made for mastership has not been made for anything else." Also, the Almighty has deemed the non-conveyance of the message of mastership as nullification of messengership itself. Therefore, after the divinity of God and Prophethood, Imamate is the most important principle of Islam. The magnanimity of the importance of Islam can be gauged from the following reliable tradition, "Whoever professes belief in God and bears malice towards Hazrat Ali (a.s.), he is a liar."

Thus, we see that practical Tawheed is not possible without Imamate, because it is the cause of completion of Prophethood and executor of its plans. To give Imamate its due importance, many Sunni authors have written books about the virtues and excellence of Hazrat Alt (a.s.), naming them, "FORTY TRADITION." Prominent among them are Khateeb-Baghdadi (D. 426 A. H.) who wrote 'Arbaeen Fi Fazaael Ameerul Momeneen', Khateeb-e-Khwarazmi (D. 568 A.H.) wrote 'Arbaeen Fi Fazaael-e-Ameeril Momeneen' and Raziuddin Ahmed Ismaael Taleqaani Shafe'ee (D. 590 A.H.) wrote a book called, 'Al-Arba'oon Al-Muntaqa Fi Fazaael-e-Ali al Mu-tuza. Hence, taking the Prophetic tradition into consideration and following the path tread by the great Islamic scholars of old, even we have made an attempt to collect forty Traditions glorifying Hazrat Ali Ibn abi Talib (a.s.) in this article.

But before commencing our article, the following points should be kept in mind;-

1) All the traditons are from Sunni books
2) Only those traditions are recorded which are narrated by Abu Bakr, Umar, Usman, Moawiya and Ayesha.
3) Even though the traditions which are narrated by great companions of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) like Salman, Ammar, Abuzar, Ibn Abbas, Abu Raafe, Maalik Ibn Anas, Abu Huraira, Abu Tu-fail, Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood, Zaid Ibn Arqam etc were more clear and expressive in this regard but they are not taken into consideration because according to Sunnis the narrations of Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Usman and Moawiyah) being the greatest among the Sahabees, is absolutely corrert, their statement is all truth and their words are hujjat (proof) for all Sunnis. Therefor in narrating prophetic tradition we restrict ourselves to their statements so that there remains no excuse for denying the truth by Sunni brothers.

It's worth reminding the readers that the traditions mentioned here are only the selected forty. Otherwise there are innumerable traditions found in sunni books glorifying Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) narrated from the three Ca-liphs, Moawiya, and Ayesha. The details will be provided later, Inshallah at the best available op-portunity.
We will arrange the traditions according to the narrators and the chain of narrators are not mentioned because most of the people are not quite interested in it. Those who are zealous in knowing the chain of narrators may refer to the references provided. References are taken mostly from book printed in Lebanon and Egypt and therefore its quite possible that the number of pages referred to may differ from those editions which are published in India.
After this brief introduction, we commence the forty traditions under the grace and bounty of Allah and with help of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) and Imam-e-Zaman (a.t.f.s.)

We start the series with traditions narrated by

Abu Bakr :-
(1) Umar Bin Khattab says, "I heard Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Gahafa quoting the Holy Propet (s.a.w.) thus, "Allah has created angels from the light of Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.)'s face. They are constantly praising and glorifying Allah, the reward of which is accounted in Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and his progeny's name." (Ref: Me'ah Manqebah, page 148, Manqebat no. 80).

(2) Shab'i narrates : "Abu Bakr was sitting when he saw Ali Ibn Abi Talib coming. On seeing him, he remarked, 'Whoever wants to see a person who is having the highest position in the eyes of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), who is having maxi-mum proximity towards the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), whose leadership is the best, and who is the most self-sufficient, should see the approaching person." (Manaaqeb-e-Khwaarazmi, chap. 14, page 98 from Fazaae-lul Khamsah, vol. 1, page 343.)

(3) Abu Bakr narrates : "I saw the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) in a tent resting on an Arabic bow along with Ali, Fatima, Hasan & Husain (p.b.u.t). He (s.a.w.) said : "Whosoever is at peace with the people in this tent, he is at peace with me and whosoever is at war with them is at war with me. Whosoever is friendly with them, I an his master. Only he whose birth is legitimate and ancestors pure, will be their friend. And whoever is illegiti-mate and his birth impure, will be their enemy (Riyaz-un-Nazra, vol. 2, page 199, Fazaaelul Khamsa, vol. 1, page 298).

(4) Six days after the demise of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), Hazrat Ali (a.s.) and Abu Bakr went on his grave. Ali (a.s.) told Abu Bakr to go ahead. On this, Abu Bakr said : "How can I walk ahead of a person about whom I have heard the Propeht (s.a.w.) saying, ' Ali is as near to me as I am to my Lord'. (Riyaz-un-Nazrah, vol.2,p.l63, As-Sawaaeq page 106, Fazaaelul Khamsa vol.1, page 344).

(5) Anas Ibn Malik narrates : I was with Abu Bakr when I heard him saying that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) has said :"0n the bridge of 'Seraat', there is one valley, which none can pass except he who has been permitted to do so by Hazrat Ali (a.s.). "I have also heard the Prophet (s.a.w.) saying ,"I am the seal of the Prophets while Ali is the seal of the successors." (Taarekh-e-Baghdadi, vol.l0.page 356, Fazaaelul Khamsa, vol.3,page 131).

(6) Abu bakr narrates a tradition from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) "Seeing Hazrat Ali (a.s.) is worship." (Tareekhul Khulafa, page 88 Printed by Maktab-e-lshaa'atui Islam, Delhi).

Those traditions which are narrated by

Umar Ibn Khattab:

(7) Abdullah Ibn Umar, narrates from his father, that he asked the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) about Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.). The Prophet (s.a.w.) got annoyed and remarked, "Do the people question about him who is as near to the Almighty as I am. And who is having the same status, except Prophethood, as I am having ? Listen attentively whoever befriends Ali be-friends me, whoever befriends me, he gains Allah's satisfaction and whoever gains Allah's satisfactions, his reward is heaven. Whoever befriends Hazrat Ali (a.s.), angels pray for his for-giveness (of sins). The doors of paradise are opened for him, he can enter from whichever door he pleases. Whoever befriends Ali, his deeds will be presented to him on his right hand ( i.e. his account will be lessened). He will be accounted along with the Prophets. Whoever befriends Ali, he cannot depart from this world till he has sipped the water of the Kauthar fountain, eaten the fruits of the 'Tooba' tree and seen his place in the heaven. Whoever befriends Ali, Allah eases his tortures after death and makes his place like one of the garden of Paradise. Whoever befriends Ali, Allah will grant him fairies in accordance with the number of his physical veins, accept his intercession for eighty people and provide him with cities for each frag-ment of hair in his body.
Whoever recognises Alt and befriends him, Allah will send unto him the angel of death as He used to send him to the Prophets and will relieve him of the pressurs of the Nakeer and Munkar (the two questioning angels in the grave). He will lighten up his grave. He will increase the space of his grave equal to the distance of seventy years of travel and brighten his face on the day of judge-ment.
Whoever befriends Ali, Allah will enumer-ate him among the truthful ones, the witnessess and the good-doers and keep him under the shadow of His Throne. He will be preserved from the afflictions of the hereafter.
Whoever befriends Ali, Allah will accept his good deeds, ignore his mistakes and give him a place in the paradise along with Hamza, the chief of the martyrs. Whoever befriends Ali, Allah will entrench wisdom in his heart, truth shall flow on his tongue and the Almighty will open the doors of mercy upon him.
Whoever befriends Ali, he is called as the divine captive on earth. Angels and the throne bearers continuously glorify him.
Whoever befriends Ali, he is called by the angel below the throne, saying, "0 servant of Allah, Do your deeds again. Allah has forgiven all your sins.
Whoever befriends Ali. Allah will crown him with nobility and greatness and bestow upon him great respects.
Whoever befriends Ali, he will enter the court of the Day of Judgement like a full shining moon.
Whoever befriends Ali, he will pass the path of Seraat like lightening. He will not feel its problems at all. Whoever befriends Ali, Allah will guarantee his safety from hell-fire. He will be granted protection from hypocrisy, permission to pass easily from the path of Seraat and safety from chastisement.
Whoever befriends Ali, his record-sheet will not be produced. The scale will not be made ready for him. He will enter the heaven without any account.
Whoever befriends the progeny of Moham-med (s.a.w.), he will be protected at accounting, measure and path of Seraat.
Whoever dies in the love of Muhammad's (s.a.w.) progeny, the angels shake hands with him. The spirits of Prophets visit him and Allah accepts all his prayers.
Whoever dies hating the children of Mu-hammad (s.a.w.) ,he will die as a disbelievever.
Whoever dies in the love of Muhammad's (s.a.w.) progeny he will die in safety and I will be his sponsor in paradise.
Whoever dies bearing malice against the progeny of Mohammad (s.a.w.) , he will be brought on the day of judgement with letters inscribed between his eyes:-"He is despaired of Allah's mercy."
Whoever dies hating the progney of Mo-hammad (s.a.w.) can not whiff the scent of paradise.
Whoever dies bearing hatred against he progeny of Mohammad (s.a.w.), he will be raised dark and black, from his grave."

(8) Abdullah Ibn Abbas narrates that he heard Umar Ibn Khattab saying, "Lessen the re-membrance of Hazrat Ali (a.s.) because he has three attributes which were found in the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) If even one of these three were in me, it would have been better than all those things on which sunlight falls. I, Abu Bakr, Abu Obaidah and a few other companions of the Prophet (s.a.w.) were going. We reached the house of Umme Salma and saw Hazrat Ali (a.s.) standing at her door. We told him that we want to meet the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). Ali replied :" He will be coming soon. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) came and we started walking along with him. He (s.a.w.) was leaning against Hazrat Ali (a.s.) with his hand on Hazrat Ali (a.s.)'s shoulders. Then he (s.a.w.) told Ali : "0 Ali, you will be compared to others. You are the first one to believe, know God more than anyone else and fulfil your oath to Allah. You are most kind to the people and your tragedies are in plenty too. You are the strength of my hand. You will give me bath (after death ) and you will bury me. You will hear everything but never disbelieve after me. You will march with the standard of Hamd in front of me and keeping the pople at bay from my fountatin of Kauthar." (Re: Kanzul Ummal, vol. 13,p.ll7, hadith no 36378, Ibn Abil Hadeed, vol.l3,page 230. Bostan-e-Marefat, page 609-611).

(9) Umar Ibn Bushra Al-Khashami nar-rates from Umar Ibn Khattab : "Hazrat Ali (a.s.) has maximum knowledge of what was revealed to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). "(Ref: Shawaahedut Tanzeel, vol.l,p.30 hadith no.29, Bostan-e-Mare-fat, 654-655).

(10) Some people approached Umar Ibn Khattab with a divorce matter. Umar handed over this matter to Hazrat Ali (a.s.). Seeing this, one person remarked, "We had come to the Caliph with the problem but he has handed it over to somebody else." When Umar Ibn Khattab heard it, he said : Woe unto you, Do you know who he is ? He is Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) I have heard the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) saying about him, 'If the heavens and the earth are kept on one side of the scale and the faith of Ali on the other, definitely
Ali's faith will be heavier than the heavens and the earth'. (Re: Manaqeb-e-Khwarazmi, ch.13, pg 289, hadith no.33, Bostane Marefat pg 170-173)

(11) Ibn Abbas heard Umar ibn Khattab saying, "The best judge among us is Ali". (Re :Sahih Bukhari, vol.6,Kitabul Tafseer, Manaqeb Kharazmi, ch.7,pg.47 Bostane Marefat, pg.655-656)

(12) Umar Ibn Khattab quotes the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.), "None equalled the virtues of Hazrat Ali (a.s.). It guides those who seek it and protects them from destruction." (Ref: Riyazun Nazrah vol.2, pg.214, Zakhaerul Uqba, pg.16).

(13) Umar Ibn Khattab narrates-:" Certainly Fatema, Ali, Hasan and Husain will be in monumental building in paradise, the ceiling of which will be throne of God". (Ref : Kanzul Ummal, vo;1.2,pg.216).

(14) Umar Ibn Khattab saw a man abusing Hazrat Ali (a.s.) He told him : "You seem a hypo-crite unto me. I have heard the Prophet (s.a.w) saying " Hazrat Ali (a.s.) is to me what Haroon (a.s.) was to Moosa (a.s.), except that there is no Prophet after me." (Ref: Tareekh-e-Baghdad, vol.7,pg.452).

(15) Umar Ibn Khattab relates that "Hazrat Ali (a.s.) is the master of all those whose Master is the Holy Prophet (r a.w.). Ref: Riyazun Nazra, vol.2, pg.170).

(16) Umar Ibn Khattab asked the people, "Whom will you appoint as the Caliph after me ? One person answered:" Zubair Ibn Al-Awaam". Umar said ; "An unethical person" Another said ;'Zubair Ibn Abdullah'. Umar asked, 'How can you appoint a person who mortaged his land to a Jew, given to him as a present by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.).? The third said :" Ali Ibn Abi Talib. On hearing this Umar cried, I swear by my life, you will not make him a Caliph. I swear by the one in whose power is my life, he (ALI) will keep you on the right path, even if you detest him." (Kanzul Ummal vol.3,pg 158).

(17) Hazrat Ali (a.s.) was mentioned in Umar's presence. He said: He is the Prophet's (s.a.) son-in-law. Archangel Jibraeel came to the Prophet (s.a.) and said, "0 Mohammad Indeed Allah commands you to marry your daughter Fatema to Ali." (Zakhaerul-Uqba, pg.31.)

(18) Umar Ibn Khattab said ; "Be friend of the gentle and be away from the degraded people. Remember, no gentleness is complete with out the mastership of Hazrat Alt (a.s.)". (Ref: Saweq.pg.l06)

(19) There was dispute between Ali (a.s.) and another person in Umar's presence. Umar told that person, "Do you know who is in this grave ? Mohammad Ibn Abdullah Ibn Abdul Muttalib (s.a.). Whenever he (Muhammad) (s.a.) remembered Hazrat Ali (a.s.), he remembered in kindness. If you try to reduce his status, you have hurt the owner of this grave" (Riyaz-un Nazrah, Vol.2, pg 167.)

(20) Umar was told: "You don't treat others like you treat Ali" Umar replied : "He is the master of those whose master is the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)". (Ref: Riyaazun Nazrah, vol.2.pg 169).

(21) Two Arabs came fighting to Umar. Umar told Ali (a.s.): "Judge between them. One of them asked sarcastically, "Will he judge between us ? An annoyed Umar rushed towards him and caught him by the scruff of his neck, saying, "Woe unto you! Don't you know who he is ? He is my master and the master of every believer". (Ref: Zakhaerul Uqba, pg.68,).

(22) Umar Ibn Khattab said :
Hazrat Ali (a.s.) possessed three rare vir-tues. If I had even one of them, it would have been better than red-camels.
(i) Marriage to Hazrat Fatema (s.a.)
(ii) Opening of the door (of my house) in the mosque.
(iii) Being the standard-bearer on the day of Khaibar. ,
(Ref. : Mustadrak-us-Saheehain, vol. 2. pg. 125)

Now we go for the traditions narrated from

Mowaiya-ibn-Abi Sufyan:

(23) Mowaiya was in the company of-his wife Faakhta binte Qarzah, when he got the news of Hazrat Ali (a.s.)'s martyrdom. He said : "We have come from God and to Him shall we return. (Quran). Knowledge, grace and goodness have left this world". His wife retorted: "Today, you are expressing grief at his death while till yesterday you were inflicting tortures upon him". Mowaiya replied, "Woe unto you! Don't you know about the magnanimity of the loss of knowledge, grace and services". (Ref: Faraaedus-Simtain, vol.l.pg.372,373, Bostane Marefat,pg.220,221).

(24) A man asked some questions from Mowaiya. Mowaiya told him : "Ask Ali (a.s.), he knows more (than me )" . That man said, "I like your answer more (than His)."Mowaiya re-marked, "You have uttered a very inappropriate thing. You hate a person in whom the Holy Prophet (s.a.) has ingrained knowledge and about him he (s.a.) has said: You are to me what Haroon was to Moosa except that there is no Prophet after me ".Are you not aware that whenever Umar faced any problem, he resorted to Hazrat Ali (a.s.) ? (Ref: Riyaazun Nazrah, vol.2,pg.l95)

(25) A person approached Mowaiya and said: I am coming from a dirty minded, coward and a miser called Ali Ibn Abi Talib". On hearing this, an infuriated Mowaiya asked, "Do you know what you are saying ? As far as dirty mindness is concerned if all the tongues are on one side and Ali on the other, then too Ali's tongue will suffice. As far as cowardice is concerned, may your mother cry for you, have you not seen that who ever came to fight him was killed. As far as miserliness is concerned, I swear by God, if he had two houses, One of gold and the other of dust, he would first spend the house of gold in the way of Allah". (Ref: Al Imamah wal Siyasah, pg 98)

Those traditions which were narrated by

Ayesha binte Abu Bakr.

(26) Anas narrates from Ayesha that : I heard the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) saying, 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib is the best of humans. Whoever denies him, he has indeed disbelieved" Somebody asked "So why did you fight against him ?" She replied, "That was my personal problem and I was insti-gated by Talha and Zubair ".(Me'ah Manqabah, pg. 138.P.70).

(27) Ayesha quotes the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.): "Rememberence ofAli (a.s.) is worship". (Ref:Manaqib Khwaarazmi, pg.261 : Kanzul Ummal, vol. 6.pg.l52).

(28) Ayesha narrates, "When my father was on his death-bed, Hazrat Ali (a.s.) came to visit him. My father was constantly looking at him. When Hazrat Ali (a.s.) went away, I asked my father as to why he has looking at Hazrat Ali (a.s.) constantly without batting an eye lid ? My father answered: "My daughter, I heard the Holy Prophet (s.a.) saying. "Looking at the face of Hazrat Ali (a.s.) is worship" (Ref: Manaqeb Ibn Maghazeli, pg 207, Hadith no. 245, Riyaazun Nazrah, vol.2,pg. 219 Meah Manaqebah- pg 151,159, Manqebat no. 84)

(29) Ayesha says that I asked the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) "Who is the best among men after you? " He (s.a.w.) replied: "Ali, because, he is from my own self and I am from him". (Ref: Manaqeb Khaarazmi, chap. 14,pg.90).

(30) Ayesha said : "Hazrat Ali (a.s.) is the most learned among the companions of Holy Prophet (s.a.w.)". (Ref: Shawaahedut Tanzeel, vol.l.pg.35, Bostane Marefat, pg.658).

(31) Another similar tradition is also nar-rated from Ayesha: "Ali is having the most knowledge about the Sunnah."(Manaqub-e-Khaarazmi, ch.7,pg.46, Zakhaaerul Uqba, ch.6,pg.77, Bostane Marefat -pg.658,659)

(32) Ayesha was asked by a gathering about Hazrat Ali (a.s.). Ayesha answered. "You have asked about a person who was loved the most by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). He was the husband of the most dearest of the Prophet (s.a.w.). Once I saw Ali, Fatema, Hasan, and Husain gathered under a cloak along with the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.). He (s.a.w.) said : )Allah ! These are my Ahlebait, my helpers and my supporters, Keep away all kinds of dirt (and sins) from them and purify them in the best form of purification." I said :0 Messenger of Allah! Even I am from your Ahlebait ". He said ; 'Keep away.........." ( Shawaahed ut Tanzeel, vol.2, pg.39, Ayat ul Tatheer, vol.1, pg.237)

(33) Laila Al Ghafaariyah narrates: "When Hazrat Ali (a.s.) went to Basra, I accompanied him. There I met Ayesha and asked her if she had heard any tradition about Ali's glorification from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) She answered : "Yes, Qne day the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) came to my house wearing a velvet cloak. He sat right in front of me. I asked: I s there not a more spacious place than this ?. He said ; " Ayesha, call my brother because he is the first to believe in Islam. He is the ultimate in fulfilling my oaths and promises and he will be the first to meet me on the day of the Judgement".
al Isaayah, vol. 8 part 1, pg.183)

(34) Ayesha narrates that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said : "The best brother is my brother Ali. The best uncle is my uncle Hamza. The remem-brance of Ali is worship." (Al-Sawaaeq, Hadith. No.74).

(35) Ayesha narrates that Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) fold me on his death bed, "Call my friend." People called Abu Bakr. When He (s.a.w.) saw Abu Bakr, he put his head down. (in disapproval). Then people called Umar and the Prophet re-peated his action. Then again he (s.a.w.) said :
"Call my friend." people called Ali. When the Prophet saw him, he took him under his cloak and embraced him till death overtook him."(Riyaaz un Nazrah, Vol.2,p.180).

(36) Ayesha says that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) told, "Call the chief of the Arabs." I asked, " Are you not the chief of the Arabs ? He replied, "I am the chief of all humans while Ali is the chief of the Arabs." (Mustadrak Al Saheehain, vol.3, p. 124, Riyaaz un Nazarah, vol.2, p. 177).

(37) Ayesha was asked as to who was loved most by the holy prophet ( s.a.w.). She answered : Fatemah. And among the men ? She replied :
"Her husband Ali who fasts during the day and worships during the night". (Sahih Tirmidhi, vol.,2, pg.310).

(38) Ayesha narrates that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) told Hazrat Ali (a.s.). "0 Ali It is suf-ficient for you that your lovers will have no desires at the time of their death, no terror in the grave and no fear on the day of judgement" (Tareekhe Baghdadi, vol,4, pg.102).

(39) When Hazrat Ali (a.s.) was martyred, Ayesha said, "Now, the Arabs can do whatever they desire. There is none to stop than from evils and vices." (Al-Istee'aab, vol 2, pg 469).

(40) Finally, Ayesha narrates: "Allah has not created any creature which is more beloved to the Holy Prophet than Hazrat Ali (a.s.)." (Ali wal Khulafa, pg.386, Kefaayatui Taalib pg.184).

These were some of the traditions narrated by the caliphs and others who were at logger-heads with Hazrat Ali (a.s.) during his entire life time. These traditions prove that the sun of glory of Hazrat Ali Ibn Abi Taib (a.s.) shone so brightly, that it was impossible to cover or conceal it. To deprive him of his rights, to wage a war against him, to create all sorts of problems for him, it was the result of long-standing hatred which they bore against him, but concealed it in their hearts. One thing which is comprehensive and not understandable is that despite all these virtutes and excellences, why was Hazrat Ali (a.s.) kept at bay. One wonders how all these will answer the Al-Mighty and His Messenger (s.a.w.) on the day of Judgement ? How they will match their deeds with their words ? Even more pitiable are those who claim to be the students of the Caliphs school of thought and the Syrian seminary. After all these virtues, they try to conceal the glorification's of the Ahlebait and detest their remembrances.

Honourable Reader,
It is important to bring to your kind notice that the articles of the ghadeer issue contains references from Renowned Sunni Scholars' author of authentic and reliable books.

If they (Sunni's) have absolute faith and reliance in their Scholars and their books, then denial of Hazrat Ali's right of Caliphate immediately after the Holy Prophet is distinctly impossible.
